Jessica Weiss enters her eigth season directing the Randolph-Macon field hockey team in 2023. In the six seasons since Weiss arrive in Ashland, Randolph-Macon has seen swift and remarkable improvement in win percentage, goals scored and goals-against-average. R-MC returned to the ODAC Tournament back-to-back years in 2017 and 2018 for the first time since 2013 and 2014 and hosted a quarterfinal match on campus in 2019 for the first time in more than five years.
Weiss is a graduate of the 2022 NCAA Women Coaches Academy Class #51. The NCAA Women Coaches Academy, hosted in partnership between WeCOACH and the NCAA, is a multi-day growth and development program available to NCAA coaches of all experience levels, designed for women coaches who are ready to increase their individual effectiveness by learning advanced skills and strategies that directly affect their personal and team success.
Under Weiss, the program has seen its first All-Region selection in more than five years, an ODAC Player of the Week nod for the first time since 2015, 12 All-Conference selections, 14 NFHCA Academic Squad members (the most in program history coming in 2018), 26 ODAC All-Academic selections and most recently had two top-six NCAA Division III individual statistical performances from goalkeeper Gatlin Snyder and defender Megan May. Snyder finished the 2018 season ranked sixth in save percentage, while May finished tied for second in defensive saves.
Prior to joining the staff at R-MC, Weiss began her career as an assistant at her alma mater, Susquehanna University in Fall 2008, before becoming the assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Christopher Newport University until 2012. The Captains won three USA South championships and made three appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Following one season of solely coaching women’s lacrosse, she began working with the field hockey program. During her seven seasons as an assistant coach at Christopher Newport, the Captains earned five NCAA Tournament appearances, reached the Sweet 16 twice and advanced to the Final Four once. Weiss coached nine All-Americans, 20 All-Region selections, 32 All-State honorees and 10 Senior All-Stars.
Weiss currently works with USA Field Hockey Level I athletes in Region 8 and coached at the U16 National Futures Tournament this summer. Prior to her time in Ashland, Weiss had six years of club coaching experience, where she worked with Stick Power Field Hockey Club in Newport News, serving as club goalkeeper coach and the club’s financial manager.
As a student-athlete, Weiss played field hockey (2004-07) and lacrosse (2006-08) at Susquehanna. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 2008 with an emphasis in Finance and a minor in Information Systems. Weiss was a Dean’s List honoree and a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Order of Omega leadership honor societies. She also earned the Stein Scholarship for International Internships and was assigned to London, working in a finance and accounting department for a not-for-profit business.
Weiss recently earned a Master of Education degree in Sport Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2017. Along with her coaching duties at R-MC, she is an adjunct professor in VCU’s Center for Sport Leadership graduate program.
